What are CBD creams?

CBD cream is a topical ointment that’s infused with cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. CBD cream can be used to treat muscle, joint, and nerve pain and skin conditions where the application of cannabinoids directly to the skin may help bring relief.

The best part about using CBD cream is that it’s non-addictive, unlike some painkillers on the market today.

For knee pain sufferers, some of the benefits of using CBD cream include:

· Strengthens the immune system and increases joint health

· Promotes healthy sleep patterns and reduces anxiety and depression

What ingredients are in CBD creams?

The ingredients in CBD creams vary depending on the specific product, but most CBD creams contain some combination of CBD oil, coconut oil, Shea butter, and beeswax.

Other ingredients of CBD creams for knee pain may include:

· Aloe vera extract

If the CBD cream does not contain beeswax, it is possible that you may not get the same results from using traditional cannabis medicine.

What are CBD creams used for?

CBD creams are generally used to treat various kinds of pain, including arthritis, inflammation, fibromyalgia, and carpal tunnel.

The CBD cream can be used to treat physical aches and discomfort on the knee area including the joints. Another popular use for CBD creams is to supplement or complement traditional forms of treatment for cancer patients—such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy—to help manage pain.

Is CBD cream safe to use?

CBD creams are considered a natural alternative for people who suffer from chronic knee discomfort and other forms of arthritis/inflammation pain. However, as with any other product that you put onto your body, it’s important to exercise caution when using CBD cream. If you’re experiencing pain in a particular area, it’s best to test the cream on a small patch of skin before proceeding to cover your entire knee.

It’s important that you stick to the recommended dosage so you don’t experience any negative side effects from taking too much CBD. If in doubt, consult a doctor or medical professional prior to using.

What causes knee pain?

There are a variety of causes for knee pain, and each individual case may be different. The most common causes of knee pain include:

This is characterized by inflammation and damage to the joints resulting in chronic discomfort and stiffness within the joint. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis that involves wear and tear on the joints.

The knee is one of the most common regions affected by arthritis, and it can also affect other areas such as your lower back and hand. Osteoarthritis causes stiffness, swelling, and pain around the joint and may limit your range of motion.

Knee Injuries

Injuries to the knee area may be caused by falls, overuse of the area, or injuring it during sports. This can result in a fluid buildup within your knee known as a bruised quadriceps, which causes inflammation and pain.

Patellar Knee Tracking Disorder (Runner’s Knee)

This is also referred to as patellofemoral pain syndrome and is a common condition that involves pain around the kneecap. When your patella doesn’t move properly, knee pain may develop as a result of misalignment during movement.

Patellar tracking disorder is a chronic disease and it’s usually treated with physical therapy to strengthen muscles surrounding the knee or cortisone injections.

Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome

The iliotibial band is a thick strand of tissue that runs down the outer side of your upper leg and connects to your knee. If this tissue becomes inflamed it can rub against the hip bone during movements, resulting in pain and inflammation.

This condition usually affects athletes who participate in sports that involve a lot of knee movement such as cycling and running.

CBD Creams for Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Arthritis sufferers may find some relief from using CBD cream due to its capacity to reduce inflammation, which is a primary trigger of arthritis. People with osteoarthritis experience pain as the cartilage that cushions the ends of their bones starts to break down.

Although there’s no cure for arthritis, using CBD cream can help to reduce the pain experienced by arthritis sufferers. The CBD spreads throughout your body once applied, which helps it to reach all areas of your knee that are in need of relief.

CBD creams aren’t just for relieving existing pain; they’re also used as preventive medicine. Using CBD cream regularly can help to strengthen the immune system and increase joint health, effectively preventing arthritis in the future.

Criteria That Helped Us Make This List

The quality of CBD creams on the market today varies greatly, so it’s important to only buy CBD cream that has been tested by a third-party lab. Some companies use potentially dangerous chemicals in their products, which is why it’s so important to get your CBD from a trusted brand.

When reviewing each product below, we looked at each one’s ingredients list and cross-checked that information with lab reports to ensure that you’re getting a safe and effective product. We also took into account the cost of each CBD cream on the market, as we know how expensive it can be to purchase CBD creams without breaking the bank.

Additionally, many of the CBD creams on the market today are sold in jars, which means you might end up wasting some of your cream if it doesn’t come packaged in a tube or pump.

How to use CBD cream for knee pain: Step by Step Guide

Once you’ve decided on the most appropriate CBD cream option for knee pain, it’s time to get down to business.

Before application, it’s essential that you check the ingredients list on your CBD cream. You need to ensure that there are no harsh chemicals being used in the products that may irritate your skin or be unsafe for use.

If you’re using a cream with menthol, wintergreen oil, or peppermint oil—avoid applying this directly to your skin as these can cause irritation. Instead, apply a small amount of CBD cream to the back of your wrist and see if you have a reaction within 30 minutes.

Of course, everyone’s bodies are different so there’s no guarantee that you won’t experience a reaction to a particular product.

The next step is for you to roll the CBD cream onto your knee area for 30 seconds. After this, wait at least 60 minutes before getting dressed so that the product has time to take effect.

Once you’ve allowed enough time for the CBD cream to take effect, you can proceed with your day as usual wearing pants or shorts if desired.

How to know if I have an allergic reaction?

If you have a reaction after applying CBD cream to the back of your wrist, such as redness, swelling, or itchiness, discontinue use and consult a doctor. These are signs of an allergic reaction and should not be ignored.

If you experience any sort of irritation or skin discomfort, wash the CBD cream off your skin completely and consult a doctor immediately.

In most cases, it’s recommended that you discontinue using the product if you have a negative reaction to it.

How long will CBD creams for knee pain last?

CBD creams typically last between 30-120 minutes, depending on the product itself and how much you apply at one time. Make sure you roll the product onto clean skin for maximum effect.

If you want to extend the amount of time your CBD cream lasts beyond the 30-120 minute mark, it’s a good idea to apply a thin layer of CBD cream and again wait 60 minutes before dressing.

This will help ensure that the product is absorbed properly and doesn’t wear off too quickly.

How to store CBD creams for knee Pain

CBD creams should be stored in a cool, dark place. This will help preserve the potency and effectiveness of the CBD cream. If the cream is stored in a warm or sunny place, it can cause the CBD to degrade over time.

What are the side effects of CBD creams?

Since CBD cream is made up of all-natural ingredients, its side effects are minimal when compared to traditional forms of medication like opioids. However, you may experience slight skin irritation or redness in some cases when using the product.

CBD creams are generally considered safe for most people to use, although you should stop using the product immediately and consult a doctor if you have an adverse reaction.

In addition to redness, some users have reported feeling dizzy or lightheaded after applying the cream.

Other side effects of CBD creams may include slow heart rate, sedation, fatigue, and dry mouth—though these have been reported as mild and not long-term.

Take CBD To Recover Fast From Iliotibial Band Syndrome

It is always better to know about the possible injuries that can emerge from running activities or physical training that involves hectic running, Your every portion of the lower body downwards from the thighs, lower legs and area of the foot becomes vulnerable to strain, swelling or rupture. One such region that is susceptible to injury from overactivity is the Iliotibial band or IT band. As this comprises quite a large part of the lower body, any maltreatment or lack of care of this tissue band leads to inflammation and pain. Worse still, it can also cause severe debilitating injuries that can impact your running ability in the long run. With the intent to assist people with higher chances of injury, this article defines the constitution of the IT band and the way to treat and curb IT band affliction.

What IT Band Means

The iliotibial band denotes a bunch of tissue that links your pelvis to the knee. It is situated on the surface of the hips and thighs and joins with the patella or knee cap directly. Being large and dense and being more prone to contact while running, more so if the legs touch each other when in motion. The main function of IT bands is to stabilize the knee besides restoring the joint mobility so as to make it convenient to run and perform various movements effectively.
IT band syndrome is an agonizing state which is caused by excessive stiffness or swelling within the Iliotibial band. Though, considered as a general routine injury faced by runners the site of pain is usually the knees. The inflammation caused by IT band syndrome, though is not a severe problem, but it is an early sign conveyed by the body that if untreated health problems may arise in future.

Causes Behind IT Band Syndrome

Prior to treating IT band syndrome, it is always better to know about its likely causes. After identification of the exact cause behind such injury its treatment gets easier and any future flare ups can also be controlled. Addressing the causes always helps to resolve the root cause instead of the symptoms. Any extra strain or pressure upon the hips and also the thighs can induce IT band condition. Some of the probable causes of this syndrome are:

  • Excess of Training specially by runners who engage in strenuous activity
  • The manner in which your weight perches on the feet or overpronation
  • Length discrepancy of the legs which results in injury arising from body imbalance and additional strain on the pelvis as well as the hips
  • Running on bumpy or uneven surfaces in particular a downward incline is not good for your feet and also the legs as it causes overpronation.
  • Lack of strength within the muscles essential for proper running like the quadriceps, abdominals, glutes and obliques. If either of them are unequally weaker, it will lead to an irregular dispersion of the running load.

Once you found out that nagging pain in the hips is due to IT band syndrome, you can try out applying heat as well as ice to the area of impact which helps in numbing the afflicted area. However, a long term natural alternative that does not carry any adverse effects like anti-inflammatory medicines do is the phytocannabinoid CBD which is reared from the hemp plant. This cannabinoid can heal the injury cause to the iliotibial band and treats IT syndrome in various ways as mentioned.

CBD Works Like An Anti-inflammatory Agent

The inflammation caused due to an injury of the iliotibial band results in the tightening and stiffness of the tissue. CBD has been found to work upon the CB2 receptors that control our immune response and combats inflammation.
Inflammation manifests in tissue damage as when it is turned on it accelerates the growth of harmful free radicals and a condition known as oxidative stress. When oxidative stress runs uncontrolled, our fat, proteins and also the DNA incurs damage. Emerging findings have demonstrated the potential of cannabidiol (CBD) of controlling inflammation and downstream impact with regard to free radicals. Moreover, the antioxidant properties of CBD helps to fight the free radicals that harm the body.

A Well-known Analgesic

Your body generates natural cannabinoids by itself which are known as endocannabinoids that aids in the regulation of pain, immune responses, sleep, hormonal levels, appetite besides more. CBD influences the body to utilize these endocannabinoids more efficiently. It stimulates or curbs various compounds within the endocannabinoid system.

Like for instance, CBD inhibits the body from assimilating anandamide, which is an endocannabinoid linked with regulating pain. Therefore, raised anandamide levels inside the bloodstream may decrease the level of pain felt by a person. As IT Band disorder involves pain while running or performing activities which involve the outer surface of the knee and also knee pain when it is bent at 30 degrees consuming CBD can be helpful. CBD can counter effectively both neuropathic, systemic and also nociceptive pain.

A Powerful Neuroprotectant

CBD protects neuron damage and has neuroprotective properties that aids in preventing and curtailing the progression of neurological ailments like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis. Moreover, CBD has also helped in slowing down cell damage in diabetics and also functioned effectively in blocking the advancement of arthritis.

Conclusion On CBD For Iliotibial Band Syndrome

While runners do often face injuries like IT band syndrome but treating it with the plant compound CBD helps to prevent its occurrence later on. The healing cannabinoid CBD on account of its vast therapeutic potential and anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties aids in the prevention of injuries emanating from running like shin splints or patellofemoral distress and sciatica nerve pain.

A First-Time Ultra Runner’s Intro to CBD for Muscle Pain

I’ve been training to run my first ultra since 2015.

No, it’s not an exceptionally long training plan. It’s just that every time I ramp my mileage up to anywhere near 50 miles a week, I’m plagued by injury or chronic pain—debilitating tightness in my IT band, plantar fasciitis, and, last fall, occasional tingling and numbness in my right foot. It’s hard to run 25-plus miles (or even a handful of miles!) when one of your feet keeps falling asleep.

The race I thought would be my first ultra was the Moab Red Hot, held in the iconic red cliffs just north of town each February. I signed up for the 55k distance and laced up my shoes, only to find, as the race loomed closer, that tightness in the back of my knee—my pesky iliotibial (IT) band, which had a tradition of cropping up to bother me since high school cross-country practice—made it excruciating to run more than about 20 miles.

At the last minute, I dropped from the 55k distance to the 33k. I finished feeling pretty good, but disappointed that I hadn’t broken the marathon barrier. There have been a few more false starts since then, including a first-timer-friendly race (the Bear Chase Trail Race 50k) I signed up for in the summer of 2017 and then had to drop from when I tripped and had a nasty fall just a few weeks before the early-October race date, thanks to numbness in my right foot.

When I had to scratch from yet another race, I realized it was time to take a long, hard look. Maybe I needed to listen to my body and stick to the half-marathon distance. Maybe I wasn’t meant to be an ultrarunner, after all.

I tried all kinds of remedies. I spent hours laying on the floor with my foam roller and, occasionally, with other, meaner-looking objects practically guaranteed to loosen my sore muscles. I saw a chiropractor and an acupuncturist. I even saw a neurologist, who ordered an MRI to rule out neurological diseases like Multiple Sclerosis. Nothing helped for more than a few days afterward.

During this time, it seemed like everyone I told about my ailments had a new suggestion: see this specialist, try that supplement. One recommendation that kept popping up was CBD. I was a little skeptical at first—I’m a lifelong Coloradan, but other than a brief hot-and-heavy phase in college and an occasional toke when I’m camping with friends, I’m not a regular pot user. I certainly haven’t spent much time in a dispensary—I’ve been twice, both times when curious friends visited from out-of-state.

“You don’t have to get it at a dispensary,” one friend finally told me. “I buy mine at the running shop here in Golden!”

That settled it. I headed to Runners High, Golden’s local shop.

“I heard you sell—” I didn’t even have to finish my sentence; that’s how often folks come into Runners High looking for topical CBD oil.

“Follow me,” proprietor Deb Spence told me, and led me to the counter. She gave me a sample to try, then smiled as she told me she knew I’d be back soon. She was right.

Frankly, I was shocked at how quickly CBD oil worked to relax the muscles in my right leg. After a few days of using it fairly consistently, I noticed considerably less tingling in my right foot, and I could run farther and farther before my IT band tightened up.

Armed with the knowledge that this stuff seemed to work—but without much understanding of why or how—I did a little research.

What is CBD?

I’d originally assumed I would have to visit a dispensary to buy cannabidiol (CBD) because, as its name implies, it’s part of the cannabis family. It has some anti-inflammatory properties, which is why I found it so helpful in topical form, and according to HelloMD, more than half of users use it to counteract joint pain and inflamed joints.

Will CBD get me high?

“CBD on its own does not get you high,” explained Ned CEO Ret Taylor when I asked some of my lingering questions. “THC, [which is] another of the more than 60 compounds found in hemp or cannabis, does. FDA-compliant hemp-derived CBD should, by law, have less than 0.3% THC, a negligible amount.”

Okay, but will it show up in a drug test?

I put this question to therapeutic massage practitioner Jake Corley of Optimal Function and Wellness. Basically, he explained, the minuscule amount of THC you’re ingesting or applying topically simply is highly unlikely to register.

Taylor added: “we realize ‘highly unlikely’ isn’t a good enough answer for those whose livelihoods depend on a clear answer so we are undertaking a study with a major drug testing lab to provide more hard data.”

I’m not going to be asked to take a drug test anytime soon, so this answer is good enough for me.

How legitimate is CBD Oil?

It’s true that CBD supplements aren’t yet FDA-approved. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not legitimate, I learned—it just means there hasn’t been enough research. That’s in large part because marijuana laws vary wildly by state, so it’s tough to get state (let alone federal) funding for research.

This got me thinking: How many of the supplements I take daily are FDA-approved? I did a quick survey of my medicine cabinet, then headed to a few different Boulder-area health food stores. Turns out a lot of supplements I’ve used—and seen noticeable, positive results from—aren’t yet FDA-approved, either. In other words, lack of FDA approval doesn’t mean a supplement is dangerous; it’s just that we’re taking things at our own risk. In this case, as far as I can tell, the benefits outweigh that risk.

Where can I legally use CBD? (And where can I legally buy it?)

For most of my adult life, I’ve lived in states where marijuana was legal, like Colorado and Alaska. But I’m about to move to Idaho, where pot is definitely not legal. Fortunately for most folks, the 0.3% THC threshold for CBD products means that, according to the Agricultural Act of 2014 (the “Farm Bill”), products derived from industrial-grade hemp with that amount or less THC are legal.

There are six states where even CBD is outlawed (including, unfortunately for me, Idaho). If you live there, or in Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, or West Virginia, the 0.3% rule is moot, legally speak. If you’re not subject to those draconian rules, though, you can even order CBD products online (thanks, Ned!).

What kind of CBD should I be using?

You can find pure hemp products at lots of Boulder-area health food stores, but don’t be fooled: many of those aren’t CBD products. “Many companies label their products as ‘CBD,’” Taylor explained to me, “While this can be true, according to the FDA this label is outside compliance. The FDA-compliant term is ‘Full Spectrum Phytocannabinoid Hemp Oil’ or ‘Full Spectrum Hemp Oil.’”

When you’re looking for a product to try, be on the lookout for the word phytocannabinoid as the active ingredient. “This will ensure you’re sourcing from a reputable, FDA-compliant provider,” Taylor adds.

Most importantly, does it work?

After a few weeks of using a topical CBD supplement—in combination with visits to my acupuncturist and regular stretching and yoga—I was able to really begin ramping up my mileage again. It was pretty incredible, after years of being in pain or even discomfort after running, to actually feel good during and after a run.

Eventually, I set my sights on the 50k distance one last time. If it didn’t work out this time, I figured, I’d take the hint.

In May 2018, I finally did it: I ran 31 miles in a single push at the Greenland Trail Race 50k in Larkspur, Colorado. It wasn’t the fastest I’ve ever run, and to be honest, I finished near the end of the field. But it didn’t matter. I’d finally accomplished this goal, and it was a long time coming.

I’m excited to see where a holistic training program—one that includes natural supplements—can take me next.
