Cbd oil vs hemp oil for anxiety reddit

Does Hemp Oil work as well as CBD Oil for Anxiety/Depression, and how so?

There is a big difference between hemp seed oil and hemp CBD oil. I believe you are referring to the latter which is simply CBD oil derived from hemp. This is the only form of CBD that is legal nationwide. The legal definition for hemp is cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. CBD from hemp and CBD from marijuana is chemically the same. The only difference is the THC content, which is the psychoactive portion. This is where 3rd party lab testing is very important. Always check for a 3rd party COA to verify cannabinoid content and ideally terpene content. We offer a variety of top quality hemp CBD products at affordable pricing. 3rd party lab tests are available on our website.

Is CBD oil effective at treating anxiety/depression?

I noticed CBD oil is available without prescription. The pamphlet has a disclaimer saying they can only call it a food supplement and not a medicine for treating/curing ailments. This suggests that they have no evidence of their claims and it is unregulated because it is harmless. It seems like it might be another homeopathy type “cure”. I know that there is cannibas oils that are effective but it seems to me that some of them might not be. Can anyone please clarify if CBD is legit or if only the controlled versions are effective?

Neuroscience PhD here.

It might be useful for anxiety, but the evidence is nowhere near as clear as people are making it out to be in this thread. More importantly, the side effects and long term effects of chronic is are completely un-studied.

If anxiety is inhibiting your ability to live the way you would like, please see a doctor. I promise that the century of research on the treatment of anxiety will serve you better than trying CBD oil.

Pharmacologist here and that’s a hard promise to make. It’s nearly 2020 and we’re still not really any better at treating anxiety pharmacologically than since fluoxetine hit the market. Yes antidepressants and anxiolytics work, but inconsistently, not as well as we would hope for overall and sometimes with horrible side effects. (of course the really good ones tend to just stop working)

Cannabis has been around for centuries. If it had severe long term consequences, we would know by now. Some of the consequences we do know have been shown to be specifically mitigated by CBD (tendencies towards increased anxiety and psychosis) or not caused by it (impaired memory). No there have not been phase 3 RCTs yet, yes there is a lack of postmarketing data, but it’s not unreasonable for someone to try CBD for anxiety before going down the prescription road or even alongside it.

This is an opinion I seem to take a bit of issue with, there are studies happening frequently. Sure a lot are company funded, but there has been a big push. Especially in Canada, I remember this company claimed it had cbd oil for anxiety and subsequently began donating bottles to McMaster University to study the effects of CBD on anxiety and major depression.

To say they are COMPLETELY un-studied would be an overstatement, and I will link studies that have already taken place below.

With some upcoming ones here:

I want to be extremely clear here – I do not know, nor do I entirely believe it would help. But it is unfair to completely deny any empirical research has taken place.

In the past six years or so, CBD has made headlines around the world as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders, ranging from mild to severe. Studies suggest that CBD counteracts many of THC’s adverse effects. Numerous animal studies and human studies indicate that CBD hemp oil has powerful anti-anxiety properties. CBD oil is safe, non-toxic and may be beneficial to treat a number of anxiety-related disorders, including:

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Mild to moderate depression

Even the National Institute on Drug Abuse – no fan of cannabis – says that CBD has been shown to reduce stress and alleviate depression. Study subjects were observed as having lower behavioral signs of anxiety. Their physiological symptoms of anxiety, like increased heart rate, also improved.

It is not a homeopathy type cure because there is actual science to support it’s use, although there has not been a lot of research into the area until fairly recently. A systematic review (including studies up to 2015) found that:

Existing preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder when administered acutely; however, few studies have investigated chronic CBD dosing. [. ] Overall, current evidence indicates CBD has considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders, with need for further study of chronic and therapeutic effects in relevant clinical populations.

There are a couple of things that you should look into / be aware of:

As you mentioned, it’s not regulated, which means (much like “nutraceuticals”) that you don’t necessarily know what you’re getting (dosage / concentration, what it was derived from, etc.).

What is difference between Hemp oil and CBD oil?

Hemp oil can be 2 things, full spectrum oil made from buds from an industrial hemp plant or oil made from cold pressing industrial hemp seed. Hemp seed oil has no CBD in it. Full spectrum hemp oil from flower has CBD in it.

CBD oil and isolate are extracted and separated from full spectrum hemp oil. This is done the same or similar way THC is removed from full spectrum cannabis oil.

Also, there are no oils or benefits from stalks or leaves from an industrial hemp plant or a cannabis plant other than fuel, building materials, clothing, etc.

Literally the only difference between a hemp plant and a cannabis plant is government oversight. Hemp is a cannabis plant that contains less than .3% THC and CBD amount doesn’t matter. Cannabis is a hemp plant that contains more than .3% THC and CBD amount doesn’t matter. You can extract CBD from either depending on genetics.

Have you used Hemp oil?

Holy shit there are a lot of people that don’t know what the fuck they are talking about in this sub. Hemp oil, the kind you’ll see at Whole Foods, is pressed from the seeds; it’s very healthy for you, high in Omega fatty acids, eat that shit. CBD “oil” is the cannabinoid extract from cannabis (yes, hemp is cannabis) flowers; anyone claiming to make this from “stalks and leaves” is a liar and a charlatan, avoid them and their products.

leaves and, to a less extent, stalks do contain CBD that can be extracted from them though.

hemp flower is actually soon to be legally separate from cannabis flower after the Farm Bill passes

Well said! Thank you for educating a few more hopefully hemp advocates! Hemp seed oil is an amazing thing. It’s also used in creating plastics or in fiberglass. Pretty sure someone is making surf boards and sunglasses with hemp plastic that use hemp seed oil as a base( I think). Additionally, and my favorite part of Hemp seed oil, the by product from pressing the seed is also filled with said omega fatty acids and can/is used as a supplement in feed for animals ranging world wide from cats to cattle. Something a lot of people are unaware of is that if a chicken is fed this supplement its eggs are infused with the omega fatty acids! Extremely exciting!

Meh. They make it from those parts in China and stuff. It’s just not efficient.

The fatty acids hemp oil contains (omega-3 and omega-6) is a standout among the most valuable well being elements of it. These acids can help decrease the signs of developing and improve heart well-being. They moreover are what make hemp oil such a remarkable cream.

Hemp oil is obtained from one of two plants of cannabis variety : hemp. The hemp plant is tall and strong, and has been utilized for quite a long time as a crude material part of various materials, sustenance, and oils. The psychoactive substances (THC) in hemp oil are kept negligible through specific present day methodologies.
CBD oil can be extracted from both hemp and marijuana, both of the cannabis plants. They are both utilized for decreasing a similar medical problems, like anxiety, sleep deprivation, and joint torment.
Hemp and cannabis are cousins in the plant world, however cannabis has a considerably higher THC content than hemp.
Hemp Seed Oil is a regular household oil made by crushing or squeezing hemp seeds, much like one would press olives to make olive oil. Hemp seed oil contains insignificant proportions of THC and CBD, and should not be confused with hemp oil or CBD oil.

Hemp oil is hemp seed oil. CBD is made from the plant itself and not the seeds.

Hemp seed oil and hemp oil are two different things, one from seeds, one from the plant

Hemp Oil is made from the seeds of hemp plant. CBD Oil on the other hand is made from cannabis oil that has a significant content of Cannabidoil (CBD). It is derived from flowers and leaves of the cannabis plants.

The Difference Is Simple

CBD Oil is the resin from the flowers

Hemp Oil is the oil presses out of the grain

**Don’t get scammed by companies trying to sell you Cheap “CBD” Oil **

If the price is under 40$, there are two things you should question, if it’s actually CBD Oil, & the quality in which it was made

Because regulations still haven’t been completely sorted out, there are many states requiring major quality restrictions on the production of CBD

Thus you can get “CBD oil” which has a negligible amount in the oil

Or you can get “CBD Oil” which has more than the legal limits of THC, which may cause you to fail a drug test

There is a grey area surrounding CBD products in some parts of the World. In some cases, products are not allowed to be advertised as ‘CBD’. I think this is where the name ‘Hemp oil’ is used as an alternative. To me, Hemp oil and CBD oil are the same thing.

To confuse matters further, the CBD extract is mixed with different carrier/base oils. For example, this could be MCT oil, Olive oil or Hemp seed oil. For the latter, the Hemp seed oil is definitely made from just the seeds. Obviously, if you have a 10% CBD extract mixed in a Hemp seed oil carrier/base, that is a 10% CBD oil. No ifs, no buts.

The easiest way to avoid confusion is remember the difference in price. A bottle of Hemp seed oil should cost around 25% of the CBD and Hemp oil prices. If your CBD/Hemp oil is $40, the Hemp seed oil would be $8.

If in doubt, read the ingredients before purchase. Any reference to Hemp extract, percentage/strength etc will mean it is CBD.
