Over the last few years, CBD has become one of the fastest growing products on the market. The cannabinoid offers all sorts of therapeutic benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved sleep, and a balanced mood.
But before taking CBD, there are some things you’ll want to know to ensure you have the best experience possible. One of the most important things you’ll want to do is to figure out how much of the compound you should take. Taking the proper dosage is vital for having a positive experience with any CBD product.
Here’s what you need to know about dosing CBD.
What Impacts CBD Dosage?
There are several factors that affect how much CBD you need to take in order to get the relief you want. However, these factors aren’t definitive and everyone reacts differently to CBD. But, there are some loose guidelines to follow.
Here are the many factors that play a role in determining your ideal CBD dosage.
Height & Weight
In simplest terms, the more you weigh, the more CBD you’ll need to take in order to feel the true effects. When taken, CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system. This system extends throughout the body, from the brain to the feet!
The rate in which CBD is absorbed and metabolised varies, depending on your height and weight. The process differs in those who weigh more versus those who weigh less.
Generally speaking, a higher concentration of CBD is needed if you’re a taller or heavier person. On average, it’s recommended to take 0.2mg-0.7mg of CBD per each pound of body weight. To get a dosage range, multiply your weight by 0.2mg and increase the amount as needed.
In order for the effects of CBD to be felt, the body must first break the compound down. This involves some heavy lifting by the metabolism, which splits CBD into smaller parts, making it easier for them to travel throughout the body.
Because metabolism slows as we get older, age does play a role in determining the best dosage for you. This means that the older you are, the longer it may take for you to feel the effects of CBD. So it’s important to be patient and give your body the time it needs to fully metabolize CBD.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, the younger you are, the faster your metabolism is likely to be. This means you may feel the effects sooner, which could mean you need to take CBD more often to maintain the side effects.
There is some evidence that shows a potential difference in how men and women react to CBD. It’s thought that hormonal and behavioral differences between males and females may contribute to the efficacy of CBD.
Early research shows that cannabinoids may have a more noticeable physiological impact on men in regards to energy balance and food intake. On the other hand, the cannabinoid may have a more profound impact on women in terms of mood disturbances and stress.
Experience Taking CBD
If you’ve taken CBD before, you may already have a rough idea of how much CBD you need to take. But even if you’ve used CBD before, it’s important to stick with dosing low and slow. This is especially true if you haven’t used CBD in awhile.
Even making a simple change such as using CBD oil instead of capsules can play a role in the effects that CBD has.
Dose Low & Slow
Whether you’ve taken CBD before or if you’re brand new to the cannabinoid, dosing low and slow is a must. CBD works to bring harmony between the mind and body. It supports keeping everything in sync and balanced. And balance doesn’t start by flooding the body with CBD. Remember, too much of a good thing can turn bad quickly!
When it comes to CBD, less is more. Instead of taking a high dosage in hopes of getting fast, long-lasting results, it’s best to start with a low dose. This way you can listen to your body and adjust the amount as needed.
Taking too much CBD at once does carry a risk of all sorts of negative side effects, including dizziness and dry mouth. The risk of these side effects can be greatly minimized by taking a low dose that is most appropriate for your needs.
Choose the Right Product
There are thousands of CBD products on the market. While oils and tinctures are most common, there are several other products, including:
With no shortage of options to choose from, you want to focus less on finding the best CBD and instead look for one that meets your needs.
For example, if you want quick relief, you’ll want to consider a CBD tincture versus capsules or any other edible product. Or, if you’re looking for long-lasting relief, a full spectrum CBD product may be best.
Choose a Brand You Can Trust
Buying from a reputable brand is another important factor in having a great experience with CBD. You want to know exactly what the supplement you’re taking is made of, to include the concentration of CBD, the type of CBD, and any other compounds that may be present.
You want to be totally confident in the product that you’re using. This is why it’s critical to buy from a reputable, transparent brand that tests its products for efficacy, potency, and safety.
So whether you’re buying CBD oil, gummies, capsules, or even a topical product, buying from a brand is the most important factor. What good is finding the ideal dosage if you’re taking a low quality product?
If you’re in the market for CBD that will offer the relief you want, here are three of the best brands to consider.

CBD Dosage Simplified: How Much CBD To Take from Experts
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is gaining popularity as a beneficial dietary supplement. Historically, research in the United States was minimal regarding cannabis and hemp. Still, today, all around the globe, research is starting to prove the science behind the cannabinoid’s miraculous displays of health and wellness.
Yet, despite the growing interest from researchers and consumers alike, CBD dosing and how much CBD to take may still seem intimidating for many people. Although it’s not as simple as saying “take two and call me in the morning,” learning to dose CBD and how much CBD to take accurately doesn’t have to feel like rocket science either.
Learning a few basic guidelines can simplify the process of figuring out the right CBD dosage.
CBD Dosage: Find the Right Dose to Take
Everyone is Different
Despite being humans, each of us is unique. Our body chemistry, genetics, lifestyle, and environment make us all very different. Similarly, cannabidiol dosing can be different for every person. Finding the appropriate CBD amount is a personal, individual process, and as such, there is no “one-size-fits-all” CBD dosage.
You also have to consider:
- How your system responds to CBD
- Your goals and reason for using CBD
- Product type
Start Low and Increase Dose Slowly
CBD consumers must learn to use a process called titration or slowly increasing their dose over time until they get the results they desire. While high doses are well tolerated, less is more. We recommend trying our CBD Product Finder Quiz as we designed a straightforward and fast quiz in bringing the best product to you as if you called and asked.
CBD Dosing Schedule Example
- Day 1-3: 10mg
- Day 4-5: 15mg (feel it more than 10mg)
- Day 6: 20mg (feel it more than 15mg)
- Day 7: 20mg
- Day 8-9: 25mg (feel it more than 20mg)
- Day 10: 25mg (you feel it but a slightly less than Day 8)
- Day 11: 20mg (go back down to most optimal dose)
Try it Before Going to Bed
The best time to try CBD is probably 30-60 minutes before going to sleep because you can tell how much it affects your body. Be sure to note how well of a job it does in making you feel tired, drowsy and how well you slept throughout the night.
Too Little CBD
If you take too little CBD, you won’t notice any effects or results you were looking for. Then you’ll be wondering what all this hype about CBD is. This is no surprise since it happens to people often, and this is when we have to do our part in educating. To see results, we recommend increasing your dose by 5-10mg 1-2 days until desired effects.
Too Much CBD
Since you’ll be increasing your CBD dose, it’s essential to keep track of the symptoms and effects. As you take higher doses, you’ll notice that it’s very effective at one point, and next thing you know, you won’t feel much. That’s when you should cut down a little bit to be at the optimal dose.
You must take it consistently every day, so your body is always replenished with CBD. Cannabinoids enhance & replenish your CB1 & CB2 receptors to maintain homeostasis in your body, and continue taking it every day helps with constant support to achieve the results you want.
Keep a Journal
Some people find that keeping a journal is very useful in finding the best optimal dose of CBD because they’re tracking how they feel. Keep it simple and straight to the point. When you notice it was very effective and not as much anymore, then it means you’re building tolerance, so lower your dose slightly.
Three Tips on CBD Dosing
Understanding that finding the right CBD dosage requires patience is essential. Wait an hour after taking CBD to see if you feel a difference or even better, give it 1-3 days of consistent use.
Buy Quality CBD
Growing hemp, drying & curing the plants after harvest, extraction, and purification is not a straightforward process. When buying CBD products, you must make sure you’re buying quality CBD. The best CBD extracts are the ones that contain a wide range of cannabinoids, terpenes, & flavonoids with the least impurities. It’s essential to do your research and buy from a reputable company that shows transparency.
Less is More
When it comes to CBD or cannabinoids in general, there is something called Biphasic Effect, which we’re covering below. It’s the idea that at higher doses, cannabinoids have diminishing returns in effects and results.
This image shows the data we’ve collected & noticed from years of using CBD and also data from GW Pharmaceuticals.
Tolerance of CBD Dosage
When a person consumes CBD or THC for some time – from a few months to a few years – the body can get used to the medicine and build up a tolerance. Many people find that they, over time, need to raise their dose to maintain the same level of medicinal effect. At some point, people reach a “maximum effect,” which is when they increase the dose; it does not improve the effects. High levels of THC or CBD can desensitize the CB1 & CB2 receptors in the brain and nervous system.
If you notice it is less effective than before, do this:
- Take a tolerance break. Stop consuming CBD or THC for 3-7 days, every three months or so. When you stop taking CBD for a couple of days, fat tissues still store cannabinoids, which the body utilizes when you cut supply. The Endocannabinoid System resets when these “store supplies” are used up, bringing your tolerance down to normal levels.
- Lower your dose substantially, and then you can slowly start raising your dose.
Find Your Optimal Dose
The word biphasic means “two phases.” Cannabinoids have biphasic properties, which means as the dose increases, the effects do not necessarily improve. Higher doses can produce opposite or adverse effects. In general, smaller doses of CBD tend to stimulate the body much effectively than higher doses. That is why we recommend starting with our 300mg CBD Oil.
This graph is a representation of the Biphasic Effect and shows how less is more.
What is Microdosing CBD?
Microdosing is taking small or smaller doses than the standard amount of a drug when the full dose isn’t necessary to achieve the desired effects or not to experience any of the side effects if there are any. Microdosing is widely popular in psychedelics such as mushrooms, acid, and even marijuana to avoid the negative aspects that come with it.
In the case of CBD, side effects are very minimal, so that’s not a reason for someone to microdose. However, for healthy people looking for just overall health wellness, then microdosing is something to consider. Microdosing CBD is also great if you’re looking to take it during the day but not feel any effects of drowsiness, even the slightest.
Example of Microdosing CBD Schedule:
Day 1: 5mg 1-2 times per day
Day 2: 5mg 1-2 times per day
Day 3-5: 7.5-10mg 1-2 times per day
Day 5-7: 10-15mg 1-2 times per day
Day 8-10: 15-20mg 1-2 times per day
Does Weight Matter When It Comes to CBD Dosage?
While bodyweight does play a role in determining your optimal dosage, there are other factors, so the answer is no. This is mainly because everyone’s Endocannabinoid System is different regarding how sensitive your body is to cannabinoids. Some people may weigh less but have a high tolerance, while others might weigh heavier but have a lower tolerance.
Other important factors include:
- Type of severity of your conditions
- Your age
- Your body chemistry
- How you’re taking CBD & the type of CBD product
The Future of CBD Oil Dosing

CBD DOSING GUIDE – How Much Should I Take? [UPDATED]
UPDATED March 2, 2021 – Ready to reap the benefits of CBD? Awesome. One of the things that is most important to understand how much CBD you should be taking and what a suggested dose is based on. Much of this is dependent on our individual bodies and there is not an official serving size, in this post we cover some dosing guidelines and suggestions to assist you. As you might guess, much of this is a function of our individual weight and metabolism and body chemistry. Dive in and see what is best for you so you can get the most out of your C+L supplements and improve your personal preparation, performance + recovery.
Let’s start by addressing some common misconceptions about CBD. First off: you can’t get “high” using CBD. In order to be legal for sale in the US, CBD can’t contain more than 0.3% concentration of THC, the psychoactive compound responsible for the sensation of “getting high”. In simple terms: virtually no amount of CBD could be consumed to trigger the psychoactive effects commonly associated with THC. Put another way, there’s small amounts of alcohol in toothpaste, but you’re never going to get drunk by swallowing tubes of Colgate. That said, it is important to figure out the right dosage for your needs.
How Much CBD Should I Take?
Dialling in the correct dosage for your body is an important part of getting the most out of your CBD supplements. Once you’ve found the right dosage you’re not only going to get the most benefits from your supplements and feel great, but you’re also going to guard against wasting money by using excess product.
As a baseline, our suggested dosage is 0.25mg CBD multiplied by your body weight in pounds on a daily basis. Therefore, a 120 pound person should take 30mg CBD daily (0.25 x 120 = 30), and a 200 pound person should take 50mg CBD daily (0.25 x 200 = 50). Ideally, split your doses equally between morning and evening. With this formula you can now easily figure out your suggested dose.
That said, there is no ‘official serving size’ or standard dose’ and it varies from person to person. Your ideal dosage will be based on a variety of factors including your weight, metabolism, the type of product you’re using (tincture, softgel, topical), and body type. For the best potential for success, we recommend some experimentation and consistent usage to determine the right dosage for you. It can take 2-3 weeks to determine the proper dosage, but once you witness CBD’s effects on your body you’ll be in a better position to decide how much to take and when to take it, so be patient and take your time.
- Tinctures – taking the correct amount of tincture can be confusing, so we are going explain it in detail. This is going to be easy using the information from the formula we introduced above. First, you need to be mindful of which strength of tincture that you purchased, 500 or 1000mg. Remember, our examples are based-on only using tinctures, so adjust accordingly if you are also using softgels, oral spray or topicals.
- Now, if you purchased a 500mg Tincture, the full bottle will contain ~600 drops worth of tincture and each drop will contain approximately 0.8mg of CBD. Now, if you recall from reading above, we suggest a dose of 0.25mg multiplied by your bodyweight in pounds. For example, if you are 120 pounds you should be taking 30mg CBD per day for best results. Here is our formula 0.25 x 120 = 30mg, and now to convert that into drops, we take 30mg and divide that by the 0.8mg per drop and you get ~35 drops (experiment with between 30-40 drops and see what works best for you). For a 200 pound person, our formula suggests a does of ~60 drops per day (experiment between 60-70 drops per day and see what is optimal).
- Let’s run through this same exercise using our 1000mg tincture bottle which also contains ~600 drops of CBD oil. It is important to note that since this product is 2x the concentration that each drop now contains ~1.6mg of CBD. For the same 120 pound person that we used as an example above, you would now take ~15 drops per day (experiment with between 15-25 drops per day to see what is optima)l. For the 200 pound person, they would take ~30 drops per day (experiment with between 25-35 drops per day and see what works best for your body). Check out our PREPARE Tincture for your morning routine or RECOVER Tincture in the evening or 60 minutes before bed.
In order to figure out the right dosage for you, here are some basic steps to start with:
- Start Small – We recommend starting with smaller doses and gradually increasing as needed. Although too much CBD won’t cause any harm, taking more than you need could waste product unnecessarily. If you’re a tincture user, start with 1/2 of our suggested dose for the first week of your PREPARE Tincture in the morning or one dosage of RECOVER Tincture in the evening 60 minutes prior to bedtime.
- Take Daily – Everyone’s body is different when it comes to CBD. Many people need to build up the substance in their system in order to start seeing benefits. If you don’t see results right away, keep up your daily doses for four weeks, paying close attention to the changes you sense in your body.
Once you’ve figured out your ideal CBD dose you’ll be able to feel confident as you start maximizing the positive benefits of your CBD routine and enjoy the effects it has on your personal preparation, performance and recovery.
